Eyecare Mission in the Jungles of Guatemala

The team of 21 after a 13 1/2 hour very difficult drive arrived deep in the jungles of central Guatemala to give Eye care to people who have never had the opportunity to have any type of eye care. Indigenous tribes of the country were living where they have lived for centuries. We were able to give surgery to 70 of them and 660 eye exams. Most of them could only speak the tongue they had spoken for centuries. So it was necessary to have people who could speak both English, Spanish and the native tongue.

The patients were transported, some as much as from 3 hours away from where we were, doing surgery in trucks that were furnished by the local contractor who built an electric dam in the area for power.

The team was transported each day, 21 of us in 4, four-wheel drive pickup trucks necessary because of the terrible roads through the mountains, 30 minutes each day. The patients each day that came, the poorest of the poor of the country, we’re so very gracious for the exams and glasses given to them and the surgery that they never would have been able to afford if we had not came.

Pictured are: Het team, The patients, The truck carrying 50 patients and their helpers, 3 VOSH OD’S and 3 wassen / Eye For God Ministries Ophthalmologists doing exams and surgeries.

Thank you very much VOSH Southeast and Eye For God Ministries from U. S. EEN. and the Guatemalan people for giving your time and coming to help these people in such need.

We are still in need of 2 Nurses and 2 Optometrist for our October trip to Jutiapa.
October 12th though 18th. Please contact Glenn Lashley below if interested.

Blessings,
