VOSH/Southeast completed a very successful mission to the beautiful state of Chiapas in southern Mexico from May 19 – May 24, 2012. Ce fut un voyage de retour comme VOSH / SE était présent en Février, 2010. Notre groupe de 28 volunteers worked long hours to provide basic eye care to the needy of southern Mexico. Notre clinique a eu lieu à la salle de réunion du Lions Club-Chiapas (Club de Leones) pour 5 ½ days.

There were a total of 5 optometrists in attendance who worked hands-on to help provide glasses prescriptions and patient education, to further the education of the students in the area of ocular diseases, et de diagnostiquer les patients atteints de cataracte, diabetic retinopathy, pterygium, and glaucoma. Il y avait un présent opticien expérimenté avec son énergie et son enthousiasme sans borne. Nous avons également été accompagnés par deux interprètes de l'St. Paul area. Sans leur aide, communiquer à nos patients aurait été très difficile. Onze 3ème et 4ème optométrie de l'année des étudiants de SUNY et neuf étudiants 2e et 3e troisième année à l'Université de Waterloo École d'optométrie (Canada) were dedicated, hard-working individuals who were eager to learn about eye care and disease and to serve patients at the same time.

Our team worked together to do reliable VAs, tonométrie, pachymétrie, retinoscopy, trial-frame refractions, glycémie, blood-pressures, dilated internal exams with direct scope and BIO, and lots of patient education especially regarding diabetes. Nous avons trouvé la rétinopathie diabétique et le diabète non contrôlé à être très répandue. Nous avons ensuite soit distribué des lunettes à ceux qui en ont besoin ou leur a fourni un cadre et des verres de prescription.

Some of the notable statistics include:

• Number of Patients: 2204 (918 men; 1286 women)
• Number of pair of glasses (or frame and rx) provided: 2345
• Number of referrals for cataract surgery: estimé à 140, several more referred for diabetic retinopathy and pterygium removal

We were hosted by the Chiapa de Corzo Lions Club. Nous leur sommes reconnaissants pour toute l'aide au transport, delicious Mexican cuisine, local volunteers and translators. Ils ont travaillé côte à côte avec nous pour prendre soin de leur communauté et sans le partenariat entre le Club Lions de Chiapas et VOSH / SE beaucoup auraient continuent d'être sous-desservies et notre mission aurait pas été couronnée de succès.

With the help of the social services we were able to refer many patients to either a primary care MD for further diabetic care, a local ophthalmologist, or to a non-profit eye clinic located within two hours of Chiapa de Corzo, who hosts ophthalmic surgical missions throughout the year. Ceci est une étape importante dans la prestation de soins plus durable et le suivi; we hope to again be in Chiapas to further our work in 2-3 years.
